About this Vet Dr. Page Wages began working at Oberlin as a technician when she was a veterinary student in 2002. She enjoyed the practice so much that after graduating from NC State College of Veterinary Medicine in 2005 she became one of our team! Dr. Wages is active with the veterinary students at NCSU and participates with Christian Veterinary Mission Short Term missions (annually travels with a group of students to the Navajo Reservation to work on large and small animals). About this Vet Dr. Sawyer earned her DVM degree with honors from North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2009. She was granted membership to Phi Zeta, the Veterinary Honors Society, for academic achievement. After veterinary school, she completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery at Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Sawyer’s veterinary interests include internal medicine, dentistry, and dermatology. Dr. Sawyer graduated cum laude from Truman State University with a B.S. in Biology and a minor in Military Science in 1997. She then served in the United States Army Medical Service Corps, where she achieved the rank of Captain. About this Vet Dr. Leonatti earned her Bachelor of Science from Truman State University in 2002, and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. During college, Dr. Leonatti worked in the university’s herpetology lab, providing care for the lab’s reptile and amphibian collection. About this Vet Dr. Gintis, DVM was born and raised in Kinston, NC where he started working at Northside Animal Hospital in high school. A life long Tarheel fan, he got his undergraduate degree from UNC-Chapel Hill and a MS degree in physiology from that other school in Raleigh. He briefly left the great state of North Carolina to attend veterinary school at Tuskeegee University in Alabama. Returning to the Research Triangle, he began his career working for and learning from Dr. Bobby Sherwood at Sherwood Animal Hospital. In 1986, after approaching several bankers, he finally convinced one that Penny Road was not too far from Raleigh to support an animal hospital and opened Swift Creek. In 1997, he opened Lake Pine Animal Hospital in Apex. Both locations have flourished, and he is extremely proud of and grateful for the dedicated staff of both locations. He is one of the few NC natives that lives in Cary with his wife, Marsha, and two legged children, Haley and Drew. His four legged children include 2 Labrador Retrievers, Skittles and Wafer (the only members of the family that listen to him), and 2 lazy cats with politically incorrect names that will not be mentioned here. Dr. Strunck has been with the Care First team since graduating in 2003, spending time at the Oberlin, Glenwood, and Falls Pointe locations, before heading up the new hospital at Grace Park in Morrisville. This is actually his second stint with the group, as he did spend a couple of years as a kennel assistant during his undergraduate years at N.C. State. Dr. Strunck is a Morrisville resident, and has a happy family at home. His wife, Amy, is also involved in the practice, and takes on administrative duties while not at home with their children and house full of pets. Dr. Strunck’s main interests in veterinary medicine are surgery and ultrasonography. About this Vet Dr. Elisa Sumakeris is a native of San Francisco California, although she spent most of her childhood in North Carolina. She attended NC State University for her undergraduate work, obtaining a BS in Zoology in 1989. She then obtained her Masters Degree in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1993. She attended the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in the class of 1997. Dr. Elisa has been a member of the Care First team for over 20 years, starting out answering the phones after hours and working in the kennels, and then working her way up through a variety of jobs at the practice. After veterinary school, and a brief stint as a large animal veterinarian in Chatham County, she returned to join Care First as a veterinarian in the fall of 1998. Dr. Elisa has a very busy household that consists of her husband Joe, and 3 children – Kathryn, age 10; and Joanna and Lucas, both age 6. In addition, her family includes her Labradoodle Biscuit, her cockatiel Dink, chinchillas Roscoe and Cloud, Bella the hamster, and a tank of fish. She and her family live in Carpenter Village in Cary, and her children attend Sterling Montessori Charter School. Dr. Elisa enjoys spending time with her family outdoors, especially swimming, camping, and boating at Jordan Lake. She also enjoys gardening, and spends her summer tending a large organic vegetable garden. About this Vet Dr. Jennifer Traficanti was born and raised in Hinsdale, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. She attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for her undergraduate studies obtaining a BS in Animal Sciences and continued her stay at U of I for veterinary school, graduating in 2012. Even though she always knew she wanted to be a veterinarian, her initial plan was to become a zoo veterinarian traveling to South Africa, Costa Rica and Australia for different wildlife management, research and clinical opportunities. However, through Dr. Traficanti’s domestic externships, she found that her heart and passion lied with treating and caring for companion animals: dogs and cats. In a quest to live somewhere warmer than the Windy City, Dr. Traficanti was fortunate to find the wonderful veterinary practice of CareFirst Animal Hospital and relocated to North Carolina soon after graduation. Dr. Traficanti has a loving, happy boxer named Lady and enjoys hiking, relaxing by the ocean, appreciating theatre and the arts, and giving back to the community through various outreach opportunities.
